I am really pleased to announce that I’ve set up the forum for Holiday Property Owners. I hope this will allow you to comment on recent posts, as well as share useful tips and hints with fellow holiday property owners.

If there are any suggestions to improving the service let me know and i’ll tweak the site as required.

This is an interesting article on John Stanmeyer, a photographer who tired of congested city life and moved his family to a three-bedroom villa on the Indonesian island of Bali. It shows just how much easier it now is to be self employed, (or working abroad running a holiday property) and yet still stay in touch using broadband and it’s associated technologies.

OK,

My logo has now arrived from GotLogos.com and I have to say I am pleased with the result.

The service was quick, and polite and they delivered to my deadline. I recieved 2 gifs, one a transparent background and the other a white background. I think for the price it is certainly worth a try. Admitedly you cannot ask for changes and there is a certain element of pot luck as to whether or not you like the result. What I did do was make sure I gave them plenty of information on the style I was looking for and the message I wanted my logo to convey.

Now I just need to add the logo to this site. Watch this space.

If you’re looking to buy a domain it’s worth researching the possibilities and then leaving the decision for a while. Ask yourself is the name memorable? Could people who don’t speak your language pronounce it correctly? Does it elicit any good feelings about your property?

By leaving the buying decision for a while, you can really let the names usefulness (or not) sink in. And don’t think that someone else may get that amazing domain you’ve been looking at. In the real world, they won’t, and even if they did get in first, using a bit of creativity you’ll soon find an even better one.

On a more personal note, I’ve found one of the better services for domain name registration and hosting to be OneandOne. Their service has been consistent and I’m happy to recommend them.

With the summer comes the barbeque, spit roast and all the flame-grilled-outside-feasting. Robert Brown offers this useful advice on his blog A Work in Progress.

“I can’t even remember when I first learned to cook on the grill, and I certainly don’t remember any complicated lessons. “Go easy on the lighter fluid, but not too easy. Flip the burgers once after ten minutes or so, and then take ‘em off when they’re done.” Nothing fancy.

$25 for a custom logo seems a tiny amount of money to pay. I am currently trying out this service and will feedback the results. In my quick research, I had a look at the gotlogos site and their designs look good.
This could be one of those useful resources that save time and money.

Welcome to the new weblog of HolidayPropertyWebsites. I wanted to be able to provide a useful repository of the tips, hints and tools that I invariably uncover through my work as a writer/web designer. My main website just wasn’t the right place for them, so I set up this blog.

What is the aim of HPW 101?

I write and design websites for small businesses and in particular holiday property owners. I found through talking to clients that many of you would like to know more about some of the useful tools that you could use on your own sites. As I am already researching them for future work, I thought that if I regularly included my thoughts on a weblog, visitors would find them useful, and in return they would get to know a little about me. I’ll be frank, I hope that this will build my client base in the long term, but that’s not my sole reason for this project. I actually enjoy what I do, and having a dynamic link to my clients and future clients benefits us all.

I want to create a little community that you all feel provides solidarity, exchange of ideas and support. I imagine that running your own holiday property business can at times feel a little lonely. I know that building websites as a freelancer can feel this way! So here, you are most welcome.

Let me know what you think of the blog. I’m always open to links and suggestions (both good and bad) Make the most of the free and useful ideas here. And one day I hope to see you on my client list
